Legal BiographyKas' legal clientele spans the fields of corporate representation and financing, commercial real estate, employment law, entertainment/art law, and intellectual property law, with concentrations in startups, mergers and acquisitions. Kas' law practice has also brought him into the forefront of business development efforts at the city and state levels. In 2004, he was honored with Mayoral and Gubernatorial appointments to the development boards for both the Providence Economic Development Partnership and the State of Rhode Island's Quonset Development Corporation. Before starting his own practice, he was an attorney with Reavis + Haskell LLC, created and managed the corporate department at the Providence firm of Harrison Law Associates, was an associate in the Corporate and Securities group at Hinckley, Allen & Snyder LLP, and worked with Appalachian Legal Services in Boone, North Carolina. Kas also formerly helped to launch CitySearch.com, a successful multi-national internet business directory service, and is currently a partner of several start-up entities within the product development sector. Personal BiographyKas was born in Rochester, New York, before relocating in 1973 to his father's native Angola, Africa for ten years. Fleeing from the civil war following Angola's independence from Portugal, he returned to his mother's native North Carolina. Kas next attended Phillips Exeter Academy before earning his Bachelor of Arts (1994) and Juris Doctor (1999) degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After law school, he followed his wife to Providence, Rhode Island, where she graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design's graphic design department before co-founding Pi Design, Inc. and Sunny Side Studios. When not spending time with his wife Kate and children Nicolo and Nadia, Kas is an instructor and director at Rhode Island Taekwodo, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing discipline and self-respect to inner-city children through the martial arts. Kas also avidly collects golden age comic books. Kas' continuing commitment to volunteer service began during college, where he served as the Attorney General for the graduate school honor code systems at UNC, and co-founded the service group A.P.P.L.E.S. ("Allowing People to Plan Learning Experiences in Service"). He has a particular interest in education and learning initiatives, and has been a regular motivational speaker to area public high school students. In addition to his regular counseling and interaction with his martial arts students, he volunteers with the International Institute, the International Charter School, and the MET School. He is also an appointed member of the Providence Public Library board of trustees. Kas is a graduate of Leadership Rhode Island (2004), and is a member of the Rhode Island Commodores, a civic business group devoted to business development in Rhode Island. He is an alumnus of Chi Psi and the Pi Alpha Delta law fraternity. |
